On the back of the FA’s announcement today, that all female leagues and cups from National League level down have been declared null and void for the 2019/20 season as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Derby County Football Club Women Chairman, Nick Britten has praised the club’s senior management team and players on the back of excellent respective campaigns. He said: “While we are all disappointed, there are far more important things than football to consider at the moment and we hope that all of our supporters and their families are keeping safe and wherever possible staying at home at this time.
“Clearly the FA have not taken this decision lightly and we fully respect it. Up until the outbreak, a lot of football had been played which saw the first team sitting second in the league and the development side top of the reserve equivalent.
“The respective standings of the two squads up to the league season being called to a halt not only speaks volumes in terms of the club’s progression, but bodes very well for the future, and the players and management should be congratulated for their efforts this season.”
According to club CEO, Duncan Gibb, In terms of that future, things are less clear in relation to which league the first team will compete in next season.
“It’s well documented that we were one of a number of clubs to put forward an application to join the Women’s Championship; however the FA have been very clear during that process, in that initial consideration would sit with the winners of the Northern and Southern sections of the National League. Given that we are being advised that both promotion and relegation have been voided, we are currently unclear on the next stage of the process, but will cooperate fully with the FA on it.
