Derby County Ladies Football Club. General Manager
An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a General Manager to co-ordinate the activities of the premier girl’s and women’s football club in Derbyshire. Derby County Ladies Football Club was established in 1990 and currently runs 2 open age women’s teams playing in the FA Women's Premier League (Northern Division) and 7 junior teams competing in the Nottinghamshire Girls and Ladies League and the Central Warwickshire Girls Football League. The new General Manager will work closely with the Club’s Executive Committee to raise the profile of the club, improve the standard of players, increase sponsorship opportunities and links with other sports and facilities, with the aim of taking the club forward to the highest possible level: The Women’s Super League. The club aims to help develop Girls and Women’s football across the county, from grassroots to elite performers with the overall objective of providing a safe and exciting learning environment for all of our players. Our success comes from a committed and FA qualified coaching workforce that remain focused on player development as their primary aim, developing our future footballers, in order that all of our players have a sound knowledge of different skills, techniques, roles and responsibilities that will be needed at the top level of women's football.
The General Manager is ultimately responsible for the club. The role of the General Manager is to oversee the running of the club and its administration. The General Manager is responsible for creating an image and conducting all the affairs of the club in a judicious manner.

⦁ Increasing links with colleges, schools and other sporting bodies in the region
In order to be a competent General Manager the following attributes are required

⦁ To be a good communicator and listener.
⦁ To have the ability to delegate responsibilities.
⦁ To be unbiased and impartial.

⦁ Be able to demonstrate a strong sports network and good communication skills as well as having the ability to promote the club activities at all levels.
⦁ Have a good understanding of the FA Respect and Safeguarding children policies.
⦁ Football coaching skills would be advantageous.
We are an ambitious club that has already demonstrated a high level of progression on and off the field since our inception. We want to ensure we are run and organised in a manner that fits the requirements of the FA for a Super League Club on and off the field. The future success of the club would driven by and be the responsibility of the General Manager.

1st team Goalkeeper required urgently due to injury
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 08th August 2013
With only two weeks to the start of the season (opening game at home to Wolves on 25th August, 2pm at Borrowash Victoria) Derby County Ladies desperately need a keeper for the first team as regular Sarah Morgan has just undergone a knee operation. The club feels sure there must be a keeper out there who would benefit from playing in the top level of women's winter football, maybe while waiting for the newly extended Women's Super League which does not start until next April. Or perhaps there is a keeper currently with a club playing at a more local level who would jump at the opportunity to step up to this higher level of football.
Any player interested should contact either manager John Bennett 07843 376064 or Assistant manager Jenny Simpson 07920 758748.

Derby County add business partners as future looks bright
Derby Telegraph | 26th October 2013
Earlier this week we were delighted to tie up partnership deals with both Daybrook Services and Sunset Service & Repair. It meant that in the six weeks since I joined the club, we have gone from a position of having none of our teams sponsored, to having partners on board for all nine of them. During that period it became evidently clear that Derby's business community has well and truly bought into the club's long term vision of taking that next step into the Women's Super League. Focus for both myself and the club's Executive Committee will now move towards looking at the club structure both on and off the pitch with a view to further aligning ourselves to the more successful models within the women's game, yet at the same time not losing sight of the very things that have got us to where we are. Most football supporters follow the men's game, so in terms of an example within that world of where I see us, I look no further than Swansea City. Over the past 10 years they have built the club slowly but surely under the guidance of chairman Huw Jenkins, sticking to a model of playing successful football without compromising their attractive playing style and operating to sound business principals. On the field, with the club having risen to the heady heights of top spot in the Premier League (Northern Section), a three-figure crowd was attracted to the fixture with local rivals Nottingham Forest at the Watkinson Bowl last weekend. Alas, despite being greeted by a fanfare of Derby flags and the usual Pavarotti-esque offerings of choir master Statto, the spoils headed east along the A52, as Forest triumphed 4-0.
This week, attention turns to the FA Premier Cup when the Ewes entertain a Coventry City side riding high in the Southern Section.
The game at the Watkinson Bowl in Borrowash kicks off at 2pm.

Derby to spread cheer to sick children
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 09th November 2013
Derby County Ladies to spread festive cheer by delivering presents to sick children at the Royal Derby Hospital
A big part of the club ethos is based around our players not only delivering on the pitch but being good citizens off it too. It's testament to our male counterparts that the club's representatives are often noted for carrying out great work within the community. For our part, with Christmas on the horizon, the ladies' first team are giving up their own time to present gifts purchased with their own money to sick children at the Royal Derby Hospital. They're planning on doing this prior to our home game against Coventry City on December 8 before heading down to the Merlin pub, on Pride Park, for a Derby County Ladies community session, which will involve meeting and greeting families out for an afternoon meal and providing a few gifts to the younger members of those families. Before that, though, they have a trip to Sporting Club Albion tomorrow and a training session with the men's team at Moor Farm planned for next week. The session will be part of the launch event for Premier 4 Sport, an initiative aimed at encouraging young people to get involved in sport within their local community.
On the pitch, there were wins in the Notts Girls League Cup for our U15 Development side, the U13s and U10s.

First team and Reserves to train together
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 16th November 2013
Derby County Ladies bring first team and reserves together ahead of Nottingham Forest Cup clash
As with the world of business, social media and just about everything else in life these days, buzz words and phrases are rife within football. Football clubs are now referred to as brands and while Derby County Ladies are still very much a club as opposed to a brand, we like to be at the forefront on modern day football thinking. One of the things that we have recently brought in is a policy of 'cross pollination'. Previously, our first team and reserves trained separately. However, we recently made the decision to amalgamate the two sides into one fluid senior squad that both train and carry out community work together. Understandably, this was one of the main talking points at our coaches meeting this week and we are now looking at introducing this to the top end of our junior section.
With regard to the first team, they had a tricky away fixture at Sporting Albion, which was made all the more difficult with the loss of five regular players. It was with immense pride that we watched their places taken up by players that normally turn out for the reserve team, and they appeared to slot seamlessly into the team who managed a creditable 2-2 draw with the West Midlands side.
The girls play Nottingham Forest tomorrow in the FA Women's Premier League Cup (2pm kick off) and your support is always welcome.

DCLFC get regular spot on Radio Derby Sportscene
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 20th November 2013
Derby County Ladies FC are pleased to announce that as from Thursday 21st November 2013 the club will be featured on a bi-weekly basis through BBC Radio Derby’s 'Sportscene' programme. The 20 minute live studio broadcasts will feature various club officials, players and coaches and will focus on all aspects of the club from the Under 10’s right up to the Senior Squad, as well as the exciting developments that are happening off the pitch. General Manager, Duncan Gibb, who will feature on the inaugural broadcast said “Radio Derby have a superb track record when it comes to supporting local sport and have built up a huge following in terms of it’s Sportscene programme. With this in mind we approached them and asked if they wanted to report on an ongoing basis on the exciting on and off the field developments that are taking place. They were not only more than happy to do so, but it was they who actually suggested that they’d like to do so as frequently as every other week by way of a dedicated Derby County Ladies FC feature slot.“
Listeners can hear these broadcasts by tuning into Radio Derby 104.5FM every second Thursday evening between 6pm – 7pm.

Interest is rising in Derby County Ladies
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 23rd November 2013
It's been a productive week for Derby County Ladies, both on and off the pitch. As well as this regular column in the Derby Telegraph, we are completing a local "media triangle" with the securing of a regular presence in the Burton Mail and on BBC Radio Derby. The radio station has agreed to carry a bi-weekly live studio-based feature, to be held on Thursdays from 6-7pm, with the first having been aired this week. Collectively I believe this support will greatly raise awareness, and generate interest at an exciting time for the club.
On the pitch, the first team suffered cup heartbreak by losing 3-1 away to rivals Nottingham Forest. However, this was tempered by some superb results elsewhere. An Abigail Taylor hat-trick saw the U16s overcome Welsh opponents New Saints 3-0 to stay hot on the heels of league leaders Coventry City. Goals from Kayleigh Jones and Alarna Cartwight saw the U15s remain top of their league on the back of a 2-0 win at Lichfield. The decision to run an U15s development side as opposed to an U14s continues to pay dividends, as a brace from Anna Walster and goals from Grace Bower and Siobahn Kelly helped see off West Bridgeford 4-1.
Tomorrow, the first team are in home action at Borrowash Victoria's ground, the Watkinson Bowl Stadium, at Spondon, when they entertain Blackburn Rovers in the FA Premier League. Supporters can enjoy a double whammy by catching the reserves as well, in action next door at Graham Street Prims' Raygar Stadium against Huddersfield Town. Kick-off's are at 2pm.

The ladies game is growing
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 02nd December 2013
A delegation from the club attended the prestigious annual Women's FA awards in London this week. A number of well known speakers, including Sir Trevor Brooking, waxed lyrical about the many exciting developments around the women's game. He told a packed audience of club representatives that it has overtaken rugby and now sits in just behind cricket and men's football as the two most participator sports in the UK. The FA believe that within the next five years, women's football will move above cricket.
On the pitch, we had a somewhat surreal situation, as the first team's home game with Blackburn Rovers was cancelled, despite the reserves' fixture with Huddersfield Town going ahead on a pitch less than 100 yards away! They say every cloud has a silver lining and the inflated crowd at the Raygar Stadium enjoyed a 7-0 win over their Yorkshire visitors, Amber Denny netting a hat-trick. The U16s threw everything but the kitchen sink at Stourbridge after going 3-0 behind but ended up losing 3-2. A win would have sent them top.
However the U15s remain top of their league with a 3-0 win over Meadow Park, while the U15 Development side put 11 past West Bridgford without reply to move into second place. An 8-2 win at Southwell sees the U13s top of their league, while the U11s left West Bridgford on the back of a comfortable win.

Derby County will play Santa at Royal Derby Hospital
Isaac Crowson | Derby Telegraph | 06th December 2013
Members of the Derby County ladies' team will be handing out gifts at Derby Children's Hospital.
Pictured from left, are players Jess Simnett, Camilla Newton, Rebecca Lombard-Thompson and Drew Riley.
Derby County will brighten up Christmas for sick children in hospital this year by delivering presents. The team will visit the children's ward at the Royal Derby Hospital just before the big day to bring a smile to their faces. The team have bought the presents themselves and now the players and coaching staff are looking forward to handing them over.
It is the first time the club have done such a thing after their first team coach came up with the idea. They are following in the footsteps of the men's team who make annual visits to the hospital. Club captain Sam Griffiths (29) said players and staff will benefit from the visit in different ways. She said: "I'm really looking forward to going along because I know the men do it a lot, so it's nice to play a part as well. "I'll be shopping this week for a present that can hopefully make a little difference." Sam, of South Normanton, has one son, Hudson (4). She added: "It's a really good idea and hopefully it's something we can keep doing every year. Even if it makes just a small bit of difference to the children then it's been worth it."
The club will visit the children's ward on Sunday December 22nd, where they will hand over their gifts. The trip will also give the players and management a chance to talk to the children who might be spending Christmas Day in hospital. The idea came from club first team coach John Bennett, of Hemlock Way, Oakwood. The 29 year old wanted the girls to get involved after seeing how positive it had been for the men's team. He said: "We want to play a bigger part in the community and this was a great way to do it. It will be a really good experience for the girls because they need to get used to community projects, because in the future, they will be playing a high level of football." He said the girls would benefit from seeing less fortunate youngsters so they can get a sense of priorities. Mr Bennett added: "Everybody is very competitive and wants to win but there are sometimes more important things in life than football. To meet the children will let them have a sense of perspective."

Eventful day at annual club photo shoot
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 07th December 2013
There's a saying – 'never work with children or animals'. However, earlier this week I enjoyed the experience of juggling just under 100 youngsters along with a sheep and a horse. Welcome to the Derby County Ladies photo shoot. Our nine teams, queued pitch side at the iPro Stadium, along with club mascot Rammie and representatives from club partners, The Merlin, who brought their 'Super Horse' along too.
On the pitch, our first team play Coventry City tomorrow in the FA Premier Cup at the Watkinson Bowl Arena, Borrowash (2pm kick off).
It was another good week for the club with the U15s gaining sweet revenge over Rushall in the Nott's Cup. Last year Rushall triumphed over Derby in the final of the competition via a penalty shootout , however a last minute Sophie Bonser strike well and truly laid that particular ghost to rest. Elsewhere the Reserves continued their recent good form with a superb 1-1 draw away to rivals Nottingham Forest.

Rams keen to put cup exit behind them
Derby County Ladies | Derby Telegraph | 14th December 2013
Derby County will be looking to put last weekend's FA Premier League Cup defeat behind them as they head to Blackburn Rovers in the league tomorrow. The Rams were without several players for the League Cup clash with the Sky Blues, which they lost 4-0. But it has been an eventful week, too, for Blackburn, who have just lost the services of England defender Steph Marsh after she joined Manchester City.

Players and officials handed out presents to sick children at the Royal Derby Hospital over Christmas
Players and officials from the club managed to spread a little cheer at the Royal Derby Hospital over Christmas as they handed out presents to sick children there. Every patient on the Dolphin and Puffin wards received a gift, funded by the club themselves. First team Captain Samantha Griffiths presented both wards with a cheque for £100, which was funded by C & M Builders and Orchard Motors. Committee member Kev Johnson also presented the hospital with a portable DVD player, which was jointly funded by RWE Generation and Rolls-Royce Power Developments.
The girls had the chance to let their hair down at the club's Christmas party, which was held at the iPro Stadium with over 250 guests from the club. Special guest was Derby County mascot Rammie, who was the source of much merriment among the younger members of the club. As Derby County supporters will know, Rammie tends to vary in both size and shape, and I couldn't help but chuckle at a conversation I overheard between two of our U10 players which went something like this: "I never knew that Rammie was a girl." Upon being asked why the girl thought this to be the case, she added: "because she's pregnant!" As they say, kids and animals are never a good mix!
It has been a busy festive period off the pitch for Derby County. But tomorrow they return to action with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Rams last game was the League Cup defeat by Coventry City on December 8th and John Bennett's side will be keen to get back on the pitch tomorrow against a side who they beat 5-3 in the first game of the season.

Derby County book Palace trip
Burton Mail | 24th January 2014
Cup Fever has engulfed Derby County on the back of a fantastic 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at St George’s Park last weekend. First half goals from Hannah Ward and Paige Crossman were enough to see off a spirited Magpies side, who saw a penalty brilliantly saved by the impressive Sarah Morgan in goal for the Ewes. Derby’s FA Women’s Cup second round victory was tempered by a serious injury. Natasha Hughes will be unavailable for the Ewes’ third round tie, and most likely the remainder of the season after breaking her leg in an innocuous first half challenge. Sunday’s clash was the third successive game against Newcastle that has featured a serious injury. The tie had been in danger of an automatic switch to the North East if it had been subject to a second successive cancellation. As a result, Derby opted for the international class surface on offer at the Football Association’s nearby facility. The team at St. George’s were extremely supportive and placed the Ewes in the changing room normally reserved for Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, Steven Gerrard and the rest of the England squad. Derby also took advantage of a playing surface ideally suited to their fluid pass and move game.
The Ewes now travel to Crystal Palace for a very winnable third round tie, and Derby are considering an overnight stay in order to maximise their chances of making the hat for the fourth round. Derby County Ladies FC General Manager Duncan Gibb said: “Any potential sponsors who have admired the great work going on at the club this season, and feel that they may want to contribute to bringing this to fruition would be welcomed. They can contact me directly on 07800 563177.”

Great day at St. George's tempered by broken leg woe
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 25th January 2014
Cup fever has engulfed Derby County Ladies after a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at St George's Park. With the threat of the second round tie automatically reverting to the north east if there was a second postponement, we decided to play safe and opt for the international class surfaces at the FA's showcase facility. The team at St George's were very supportive and put us in the changing room normally reserved the England squad. The playing surface was ideally suited to Derby's fluid pass and move game and first half goals from Hannah Ward and Paige Crossman, plus Sarah Morgan's brilliant penalty save were enough to see off a spirited Magpies side. We are now away to Crystal Palace in the third round. It is a tie that is certainly winnable, and given the club's ambitious intentions, we are considering an overnight stay in order to maximise every opportunity of making the hat for the fourth round. Any potential sponsors would be welcome on this one and, if anyone is able to help out, I can be contacted on 07800 563177.
Sadly, a great day at St George's was tempered when Natasha Hughes broke her leg in an innocuous first half challenge. This is the third successive game against Newcastle in which a player has sustained a serious injury and Natasha is likely to be unavailable for the rest of the season. It was nice to have Craig Ramage give Natasha a shout out at my request on Radio Derby's Monday night phone-in. Thanks for that Craig.

Press Release - Derby County v. Arsenal
Brett Burnton | Derby Telegraph | 14th February 2014
Despite Derby County playing just up the road at Sheffield Wednesday and there being a key Champions League game being televised, 500 hundred supporters turned up at Borrowash Vics, Watkinson Construction Stadium on Tuesday night to witness Derby County take on the mighty Arsenal in a friendly fixture. The fixture marked the latest success chapter in Derby's ambitious plans to join the Women's Super League and Arsenal paid The Ewes the greatest of respect by fielding a full strength side containing England Internationals; Kelly Smith, Casey Stoney, Rachel Yankey, Siobahn Chamberlain, Alex Scott and Jordan Nobbs in front of watching national team manager, Mark Samsom. John Bennett's youthful Derby side understandably spent the majority of the game on the back foot, looking to contain Arsenal's team of household names, however superior fitness allied to experience saw The Gunners eventually triumph 5-0. Prior to the game there had been much talk of a double figure score line, given the strength of the Arsenal line up and the length of The Ewes injury list, however Bennett’s side left nothing on the pitch and did both the club and local Women's football proud.
After the game, Arsenal officials and players were united in their praise of Derby and expressed genuine astonishment at the level of home support, advising that it topped some of their own Super League fixtures! Given Arsenal's standing within the game and the fact that the England manager echoed these sentiments, there is little doubt that this message will be conveyed to those with influence within the Women's Super League set up that Derby are very much a club on the rise.
Kind Regards,
Duncan Gibb: General Manager.

Bradford next after County Cup cruise
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 01st March 2014
Following the euphoria of the prestigious Arsenal fixture last week and a superb County Cup quarter final win, Derby County are back in FA Women's Premier League action tomorrow when they entertain Bradford City at the Watkinson Construction Bowl, Borrowash. The two sides played out a thrilling 4-4 draw earlier this season and John Bennett's young side will be looking to go one better and grab all three points as they enter the game in optimistic mood. The excellent performance against Arsenal's team of internationals last week was followed by a last eight County Cup trip to Glossop North End. The Ewes returned with a comfortable 9-0 win in the bag, which included a Mel Johnson hat-trick. Our semi final opponents are as yet unknown as the club strive to defend the cup for a second successive year.
Elsewhere, it was a fine week for the U15s as they not only secured an impressive 4-0 away win at third placed Coventry with goals from Rai, Jones, Bonser and Cartwright but also saw their main rivals for the Central Warwickshire League title, Wolverhampton Wanderers, slip to defeat for the first time this season. The combination of these results sees Dave King's highly rated side top the table by three points.
Finally, the club's search for a new first team manager continues. The number of applications received is now well into double figures and includes highly rated coaches from within not only the British women's game, but also from top club sides Athletico Madrid and Ajax. There was a further bizarre turn when I was contacted by an agent acting on behalf of his managerial client! With John Bennett at the helm until the end of the season, we remain in no hurry to appoint his successor and interested applicants are still encouraged to visit our club website.

Ladies Day Report
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 12th March 2014
On Saturday 29th March DCLFC took part in their annual Ladies Day at the iPRO Stadium as the Ram’s played host to Charlton Athletic FC. A good turn out from all the teams, with family members took part in the event. Having met outside the stadium in the glorious sunshine we made our way into the ground. All the players then paraded around the pitch before the game and then most were able to take part in waving the DCFC flags and be part of the guard of honour before the match. This annual event is enjoyed by all associated with DCLFC as it embraces the family feel of the club and showcases to the community the fact that we offer ladies football to all junior age groups as well as having a senior squad. At the end of the match the younger players were involved in a penalty shoot out against Rammie whilst the older ones hung around to get photographs of the players as they ‘cooled down’.
A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all, enriched by the Rams convincing win. I would like to say thank you to all as we were great ambassadors for our club.

Derby County Race Night
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 14th March 2014
Last Saturday Derby County Ladies FC held their first Race Night in a few years. The Merlin pub kindly sponsored the event allowing the club to hire the services of Dave from Soar Valley Race Nights to host the event at Sinfin Moor Social Club. Having established a promising event the team representatives worked hard advertising the sale of horses and tickets within in each team. This meant that on the night over 70 people from across all age groups attended the evening with others buying horses. From the first race everyone got involved encouraging their horse along creating a fun atmosphere. Half way through the evening we had a visit from Rammie who took the time to meet everyone there and assist with the raffle draw. By the end of the night not only had everyone who had attended enjoyed the event the club had raised £621. Therefore a big thank you must go to all those involved in assisting the club to hold the event and the team reps who encouraged parents to get involved. The club look forward to holding an event each year that will encourage players and parents from all age groups to get together to support the club not only financially but in promoting the ‘many teams, one club’ ethos that we aim to.

Call for schools tournament entries
Derby Telegraph | 15th March 2014
Derby County Ladies annual schools tournament is approaching fast, but there is still time for schools to express their interest. The tournament, which regularly attracts up to 500 students from Derbyshire and Staffordshire, will be held at the DW complex next to the iPRO Stadium in early April, with years three and four competing on April 2nd and years five and six on April 8th. The tournament is all about exposing young female footballers to the game at a semi-competitive level at the same time as bringing them into contact with both Derby County Ladies and the Derbyshire Centre of Excellence. Players will be charged only £1 for the day and all school enquiries should be directed to Derby County first team captain Sam Griffiths: [email protected].
At club level, while developments in terms of the recruiting of a new First Team Manager have gathered pace on the back of a number of very strong applications, it was a mixed week on the field. The firsts are in action at home at the Watkinson Construction Arena, Borrowash Road, Spondon, tomorrow, when they entertain a Newcastle United side who will be eager to avenge being knocked out of the FA Cup by the Ewes recently. Derby will be equally keen to secure the points on the back of a disappointing loss at Wolves last week.

New Manager - Jenny Sugarman
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 16th March 2014
After a deliberate and lengthy recruitment process, Derby County Ladies FC have appointed a new First Team Manager in 31 year old Jenny Sugarman to take over the from outgoing John Bennett this summer, and in doing so the club have recruited their first female to the role in 18 years. "Following Bennett’s announcement in early February to step down at the end of the season due to family commitments, the club made a conscientious decision to utilise the time afforded by his intent to complete the season, in order to make the right appointment" said club Chief Executive, Duncan Gibb. "As a result twenty four applications were received, which included coaches currently involved with Champions League semi finalists, Atletico Madrid and Dutch giants Ajax. This number was subsequently whittled down to four, who were then asked to deliver training sessions to the clubs senior group prior to formal interviews taking place and Jenny being offered the role". Although quite young compared to most managers involved in the game, Sugarman already has a wealth of experience within the women’s format. "In terms of playing, whilst my career saw me appear for Shrewsbury Town, Coventry City and Leicester City, my claim to fame was to appear in the Under 17's School Girls World Cup finals at the age of just 12!" said a delighted Sugarman. "Unfortunately injury curtailed my playing career when I was in my 20's, however given my love and passion for the game, I was always going to move into coaching and then management on the back of that". Sugarman’s management CV is already hugely impressive and features coaching work with Shrewsbury, Wolves, Leicester and the New York Red Bulls prior to her being appointed Manager of Birmingham University Women's FC in 2011. During her time at Birmingham she oversaw the clubs most impressive period of success in which they finished runners up in the National University League.
In terms of her move to Derby, Sugarman is delighted to be given the chance to manage in the Women's Premier League, during what is the most exciting period of the Rams history. "Ask anyone within the Women’s game and they will tell you that the developments and progress that have taken place at Derby this season are incredible. The club have moved from being one that only stayed up on the last day of last season to an established Premier League side who only weeks ago turned over title chasing Nottingham Forest on their own patch. In addition to that big things have been happening off the pitch on the back of the appointment of Duncan as Chief Executive and John Griffiths as Director of Football. It came as little surprise to learn that over twenty prospective managers wanted to work with them, given what has happened at the club since they came on board. I'm just pleased that they chose me."
Gibb who feels that Sugarman is a good fit with the clubs ambitions, was quick to praise the work of outgoing manager Bennett. "JB took up the role three years ago with a clear mandate to leave the club in a better position that when he came on board. In my view he has delivered on that promise 100% and can feel hugely proud of his achievements. In allowing us the time to make the right appointment to follow him, we have been able secure Jenny's services and we are hopeful that she can continue the great work done by John. In Jenny we see a bright young manager who has ambitions to manage at Women's Super League level and we very much hope that she will achieve that with us." In terms of Sugarman being the clubs first female first team manager since 1997, Gibb had no issue in making the decision "Gender was never part of the equation for John Griffiths and I, it was simply about ability and having ambitions that matched our own. England’s Assistant Manager is female, as are the managers of Super League clubs, Arsenal and Everton. For us Jenny was simply the best candidate, so she's been given the job, its as simple as that."

Mixed week but Ewes are staying up
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 26th April 2014
Derby County had a mixed week – with the first team unable to halt a Sheffield FC side who have won all but one of their games this season. Sheffield wrapped up the Premier League title weeks ago, but at 1-0 down with 15 minutes left, the visiting Ewes were giving a good account of themselves. However, the champions hit three more goals in those 15 minutes to record a 4-0 win. Better news was that Newcastle United's defeat to Sporting Albion ensured Derby were not relegated.
