Bennett relishing challenge of first full season in charge
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 14th July 2012
John Bennett is a familiar face for those involved with Derby County Ladies. He joined the club six years ago as manager of the U12s before progressing through the ranks to manage the reserves. So when John Townson left the Rams in October last year for Accrington Stanley's Academy, only three months after replacing Steve Hall, it seemed only right that Bennett should be given a shot at managing the first team. Now, after guiding Derby County to fifth in the FA Women's Premier League (Northern Division), Bennett is aiming higher as he prepares for his first full season in charge. "The players were on a bit of a downer after John left in October so I changed things around a bit," said Bennett, who lives in Chaddesden and has played with Mickleover Sports and Borrowash Victoria. "They had been used to Steve (Hall), who had been at the club for the last 10 years and then John took over, and they had only just got used to him when he was offered the job at Accrington Stanley, which he couldn't turn down. I changed the tactics and played players in their more natural positions. I obviously did something right because we then went on to finish fifth in the league, losing only one game from October, got to the fourth round of the FA Cup and qualified for the League Cup, where we played Super League side Leeds United. We also beat Sandiacre Town in the first ever Derbyshire County Cup. Not bad to say I was chucked in at the deep end!" Bennett has kept all of the squad from last season and made four new signings to boost his side. "We were a bit short on numbers last season, so I've been busy recruiting. We often had to rely on the younger members of the squad last season, but with a few new faces in the side it gives us a bit more depth."
Joining the club are former Rotherham United pair Paige Croftsman and Grace John. Croftsman plays on the right wing, while John is a utility player. They have also added defender Carla Tompkins, who has previously played with Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, while goalkeeper Sarah Morgan joins from Coventry City.
Bennett is also keen to promote a number of players from the club's reserve side into the first team. "There are about five players in the reserves who could make the step up, and with the new girls, we will have a strong side for the forthcoming season. I guess that I have the advantage of knowing most of the girls coming through, having managed the reserve side." One of those players from the reserves who successfully made the step up last season was Bennett's daughter, Daisy Priddon.
"Daisy has been with me since she joined Derby County as a youngster, but she knows that I will treat her exactly the same as the other girls in the side. There's no special treatment for Daisy."
Bennett has set his sights high for next season on the back of last term's success, but with the league looking likely to be the strongest it has been in recent years, he knows it will be tough. "Any other year, you could say roughly who was going to finish in the top two and where you were going to pick up points, but this year looks like being a toughy. I'm hoping for at least top five, which is where we finished last season."
The Rams have their first pre-season game against Lincoln City Ladies at Derby University on Sunday, 29th July (2pm).
They are also still looking for players and coaches to join the club. Anyone interested should contact Raffaele Long on 07710 492 936.

Five more signings unveiled
Jenny Simpson | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 18th July 2012
We are excited to announce the signings of Sian Watts, Grace John, Paige Crossman, Carla Tomkins & Annabel Mckechnie. Derby have had a great pre-season, recruiting quality players to bolster their team for a promotion push in the 2012/2013 season. Sian Watts joins us from Manchester Utd U18s, a creative midfielder that can spray the ball around for fun. Grace John & Paige Crossman join us from Rotherham. Paige a whole hearted Derby County men's fan is overjoyed at now playing for the ladies. A tricky winger who isn't afraid to shoot. Grace is a versatile player, that when we have come against previously, have found very difficult to mark. Again has a very good nose for goal. Carla Tomkins and Annabel Mckechnie have moved down the A52 from Forest. Two young players who are very lively characters. Carla is a feisty defender that is not afraid of a tackle and Annabel is a midfield maestro with a lovey touch and can thread a ball very well. John Bennett, First Team Manager says "We are very fortunate to have signed players with this quality, it will create great competition for places in a squad that was already brimming with confidence."
Everyone at the club is looking forward to the new season and wishes the girls the best of luck in their maiden year at Derby County Ladies.

Derby clinch key signing Cresswell
Jenny Simpson | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 28th July 2012
Derby Complete the 7th new signing for the upcoming 2012/2013 Season. John Bennett has clinched what he believes is a key signing for the 2012/2013 Season. 22 Year old Lauren Cresswell arrives at Derby from local rivals Nottingham Forest. Lauren had been with Forest since she was 8 years old, winning promotion into the Northern Premier, National Premier league and County Cups along the way. Lauren has also played for England at U19s and was selected for England Under 23s, but unfortunatly suffered a horrific injury last year before being able to attend the camp. Having now fully recovered we now look forward to what Lauren can bring to Derby ladies. Manager John Bennett says "She is a very talented young footballer with a great knowledge of the game. We are very excited that Loz has chosen to be part of our squad and think she can really bolster our Midfield."
Good Luck to Lauren for the season and welcome to Derby County Ladies.

Rams show one club spirit

Derby County's first team support Ladies' team with sponsorship money
Derby County’s team spirit has been regularly highlighted in the last 12 months, but Nigel Clough’s squad have also shown that there’s a real ‘one club’ feel around the Club in the last few weeks. With the backing of manager Clough and club captain Shaun Barker, the Rams’ players put their hands in their pockets to raise the healthy amount of £2,000 to hand over to Derby County Ladies, which will allow them to purchase training kit for the 2012-13 FA Women’s Premier (Northern Division) season. “When we heard that, due to the increasing cost base in the current economy and the Ladies players were struggling to pay their subscription fees to cover costs, we quickly sought about rallying around to show their support,” said Clough. Derby County Ladies Assistant Manager Jenny Simpson said "Last year we had a number of girls who were unable to pay their 'subs', so we've had to cut them down and therefore were unable to purchase training kit. "With the money the players have handed over it means that we can buy new training kit and each player will have a Derby County players' name on the back of their gear. To see the players put their hands in their pockets says an awful lot about them. She added: "This wonderful gesture, we hope, will help change our audience now that the lads have an interest in Derby County Ladies."
Derby County Ladies would like to say a massive thank you to 'Kustomised Derby' for printing our kit with its sponsors!

Derby capture Kane
Jenny Simpson | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 19th October 2012
Everton Super League player signs for the Rams
Everton midfielder Amy Kane has signed for Derby County during the WSL closed season. Kane joined Everton at the age of 15. She progressed to the senior side, scoring the winning goal for them in the 2008 League Cup Final, before joining Blackburn Rovers in January 2009. She returned to Everton in summer 2010 for the club's UEFA Women's Champions League campaign. Kane has represented England at U19, U21 and U23 levels. In April 2007 she was chosen to join the England senior side's training camp at La Manga. She has also represented Great Britain at the World University Games, scoring a hat-trick in four minutes in Great Britain's first group game of the 2009 tournament in Belgrade: a 10–0 win against Estonia. Manager John Bennett says “to sign someone with Amy's history and ability is fantastic. This signing has come at the right time for us as a club as it will hopefully just give us the extra push we need.”
Amy comes straight into the squad for our game away to Newcastle this Sunday. The club wishes Amy the best during her time with Derby County Ladies.

Rams welcome Williams
Jenny Simpson | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 31st October 2012
England & Everton star Fara Williams trains with the rams
Now that the second WSL season has come to an end, Derby were proud to announce the signing of Amy Kane from Everton last week. Amy had a tremendous debut for the rams in a 4-2 victory away to Newcastle providing assists for 2 of the goals. This week Amy brought her Everton and England team mate Fara Williams to training too. Williams is considered to be one of the most complete players in the women's game with her tremendous technical ability and free kick prowess. Since making her senior debut in 2002, Williams has accrued 107 appearances for England, scoring 36 goals. She played at the 2005 and 2009 European Championships and the World Cup in 2007 and 2011. Williams also featured for Team GB at the 2012 London Olympics. She started her club career with Chelsea until she left for Charlton Athletic in 2001. She signed for Everton in 2004 and later captained the club, winning the Premier League Cup in 2008 and the FA Women's Cup in 2010. Williams was named FA Young Player of the Year in 2002, FA Players' Player of the Year in 2009 and FA International Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2009. Williams will be keeping her hand in with training during the WSL off season and started with an appearance at Derby County Ladies session last night.
First team Manager John Bennett says “It’s great to have two top flight players train with the girls, Amy's impact was recognized immediately in the Newcastle fixture and I was extremely pleased with her performance, to then have Fara come training was an added boost for the squad. The girls really enjoyed it as we hope Fara did, she is more than welcome to train with Derby whenever she wants.”
We hope this spurs the girls on for their next game in the PL Cup away to National Premier side Coventry City.

This is a fantastic opportunity to jump onto the FA’s 5 year strategy in growing the women’s game from becoming the 4th biggest team sport behind Men's football, Rugby and Cricket to becoming the 2nd biggest team sport behind men's football. The media opportunities are endless with ESPN broadcasting 10 live WSL games last season and hosting a 30 min weekly highlights programme.
Football is the biggest participation sport for females in England with 1.3 million female players. Participation in The FA WSL gives clubs access to a new and enthusiastic family audience. There has been an increase in FA WSL attendances of 604% compared to the previous winter 2010/11 domestic league. Research post Olympics found that 69% of the general public would consider going to see a live women’s match, up 15% pre Olympics. 36% of the general population are interested in The FA WSL, compared to 32% in the Europa League and 40% in The Championship. The growing interest and support for women’s football is proven in the viewing and attendance figures, avoiding the direct competition with men’s football by being played in the summer months.

1st team Goalkeeper required urgently due to injury
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 08th August 2013
With only two weeks to the start of the season (opening game at home to Wolves on 25th August, 2pm at Borrowash Victoria) Derby County Ladies desperately need a keeper for the first team as regular Sarah Morgan has just undergone a knee operation. The club feels sure there must be a keeper out there who would benefit from playing in the top level of women's winter football, maybe while waiting for the newly extended Women's Super League which does not start until next April. Or perhaps there is a keeper currently with a club playing at a more local level who would jump at the opportunity to step up to this higher level of football.
Any player interested should contact either manager John Bennett 07843 376064 or Assistant manager Jenny Simpson 07920 758748.

Derby County add business partners as future looks bright
Derby Telegraph | 26th October 2013
Earlier this week we were delighted to tie up partnership deals with both Daybrook Services and Sunset Service & Repair. It meant that in the six weeks since I joined the club, we have gone from a position of having none of our teams sponsored, to having partners on board for all nine of them. During that period it became evidently clear that Derby's business community has well and truly bought into the club's long term vision of taking that next step into the Women's Super League. Focus for both myself and the club's Executive Committee will now move towards looking at the club structure both on and off the pitch with a view to further aligning ourselves to the more successful models within the women's game, yet at the same time not losing sight of the very things that have got us to where we are. Most football supporters follow the men's game, so in terms of an example within that world of where I see us, I look no further than Swansea City. Over the past 10 years they have built the club slowly but surely under the guidance of chairman Huw Jenkins, sticking to a model of playing successful football without compromising their attractive playing style and operating to sound business principals. On the field, with the club having risen to the heady heights of top spot in the Premier League (Northern Section), a three-figure crowd was attracted to the fixture with local rivals Nottingham Forest at the Watkinson Bowl last weekend. Alas, despite being greeted by a fanfare of Derby flags and the usual Pavarotti-esque offerings of choir master Statto, the spoils headed east along the A52, as Forest triumphed 4-0.
This week, attention turns to the FA Premier Cup when the Ewes entertain a Coventry City side riding high in the Southern Section.
The game at the Watkinson Bowl in Borrowash kicks off at 2pm.

Derby to spread cheer to sick children
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 09th November 2013
Derby County Ladies to spread festive cheer by delivering presents to sick children at the Royal Derby Hospital
A big part of the club ethos is based around our players not only delivering on the pitch but being good citizens off it too. It's testament to our male counterparts that the club's representatives are often noted for carrying out great work within the community. For our part, with Christmas on the horizon, the ladies' first team are giving up their own time to present gifts purchased with their own money to sick children at the Royal Derby Hospital. They're planning on doing this prior to our home game against Coventry City on December 8 before heading down to the Merlin pub, on Pride Park, for a Derby County Ladies community session, which will involve meeting and greeting families out for an afternoon meal and providing a few gifts to the younger members of those families. Before that, though, they have a trip to Sporting Club Albion tomorrow and a training session with the men's team at Moor Farm planned for next week. The session will be part of the launch event for Premier 4 Sport, an initiative aimed at encouraging young people to get involved in sport within their local community.
On the pitch, there were wins in the Notts Girls League Cup for our U15 Development side, the U13s and U10s.

First team and Reserves to train together
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 16th November 2013
Derby County Ladies bring first team and reserves together ahead of Nottingham Forest Cup clash
As with the world of business, social media and just about everything else in life these days, buzz words and phrases are rife within football. Football clubs are now referred to as brands and while Derby County Ladies are still very much a club as opposed to a brand, we like to be at the forefront on modern day football thinking. One of the things that we have recently brought in is a policy of 'cross pollination'. Previously, our first team and reserves trained separately. However, we recently made the decision to amalgamate the two sides into one fluid senior squad that both train and carry out community work together. Understandably, this was one of the main talking points at our coaches meeting this week and we are now looking at introducing this to the top end of our junior section.
With regard to the first team, they had a tricky away fixture at Sporting Albion, which was made all the more difficult with the loss of five regular players. It was with immense pride that we watched their places taken up by players that normally turn out for the reserve team, and they appeared to slot seamlessly into the team who managed a creditable 2-2 draw with the West Midlands side.
The girls play Nottingham Forest tomorrow in the FA Women's Premier League Cup (2pm kick off) and your support is always welcome.

DCLFC get regular spot on Radio Derby Sportscene
Brett Burnton | Derby County Ladies Football Club | 20th November 2013
Derby County Ladies FC are pleased to announce that as from Thursday 21st November 2013 the club will be featured on a bi-weekly basis through BBC Radio Derby’s 'Sportscene' programme. The 20 minute live studio broadcasts will feature various club officials, players and coaches and will focus on all aspects of the club from the Under 10’s right up to the Senior Squad, as well as the exciting developments that are happening off the pitch. General Manager, Duncan Gibb, who will feature on the inaugural broadcast said “Radio Derby have a superb track record when it comes to supporting local sport and have built up a huge following in terms of it’s Sportscene programme. With this in mind we approached them and asked if they wanted to report on an ongoing basis on the exciting on and off the field developments that are taking place. They were not only more than happy to do so, but it was they who actually suggested that they’d like to do so as frequently as every other week by way of a dedicated Derby County Ladies FC feature slot.“
Listeners can hear these broadcasts by tuning into Radio Derby 104.5FM every second Thursday evening between 6pm – 7pm.

Interest is rising in Derby County Ladies
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 23rd November 2013
It's been a productive week for Derby County Ladies, both on and off the pitch. As well as this regular column in the Derby Telegraph, we are completing a local "media triangle" with the securing of a regular presence in the Burton Mail and on BBC Radio Derby. The radio station has agreed to carry a bi-weekly live studio-based feature, to be held on Thursdays from 6-7pm, with the first having been aired this week. Collectively I believe this support will greatly raise awareness, and generate interest at an exciting time for the club.
On the pitch, the first team suffered cup heartbreak by losing 3-1 away to rivals Nottingham Forest. However, this was tempered by some superb results elsewhere. An Abigail Taylor hat-trick saw the U16s overcome Welsh opponents New Saints 3-0 to stay hot on the heels of league leaders Coventry City. Goals from Kayleigh Jones and Alarna Cartwight saw the U15s remain top of their league on the back of a 2-0 win at Lichfield. The decision to run an U15s development side as opposed to an U14s continues to pay dividends, as a brace from Anna Walster and goals from Grace Bower and Siobahn Kelly helped see off West Bridgeford 4-1.
Tomorrow, the first team are in home action at Borrowash Victoria's ground, the Watkinson Bowl Stadium, at Spondon, when they entertain Blackburn Rovers in the FA Premier League. Supporters can enjoy a double whammy by catching the reserves as well, in action next door at Graham Street Prims' Raygar Stadium against Huddersfield Town. Kick-off's are at 2pm.

The ladies game is growing
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 02nd December 2013
A delegation from the club attended the prestigious annual Women's FA awards in London this week. A number of well known speakers, including Sir Trevor Brooking, waxed lyrical about the many exciting developments around the women's game. He told a packed audience of club representatives that it has overtaken rugby and now sits in just behind cricket and men's football as the two most participator sports in the UK. The FA believe that within the next five years, women's football will move above cricket.
On the pitch, we had a somewhat surreal situation, as the first team's home game with Blackburn Rovers was cancelled, despite the reserves' fixture with Huddersfield Town going ahead on a pitch less than 100 yards away! They say every cloud has a silver lining and the inflated crowd at the Raygar Stadium enjoyed a 7-0 win over their Yorkshire visitors, Amber Denny netting a hat-trick. The U16s threw everything but the kitchen sink at Stourbridge after going 3-0 behind but ended up losing 3-2. A win would have sent them top.
However the U15s remain top of their league with a 3-0 win over Meadow Park, while the U15 Development side put 11 past West Bridgford without reply to move into second place. An 8-2 win at Southwell sees the U13s top of their league, while the U11s left West Bridgford on the back of a comfortable win.

Derby County will play Santa at Royal Derby Hospital
Isaac Crowson | Derby Telegraph | 06th December 2013
Members of the Derby County ladies' team will be handing out gifts at Derby Children's Hospital.
Pictured from left, are players Jess Simnett, Camilla Newton, Rebecca Lombard-Thompson and Drew Riley.
Derby County will brighten up Christmas for sick children in hospital this year by delivering presents. The team will visit the children's ward at the Royal Derby Hospital just before the big day to bring a smile to their faces. The team have bought the presents themselves and now the players and coaching staff are looking forward to handing them over.
It is the first time the club have done such a thing after their first team coach came up with the idea. They are following in the footsteps of the men's team who make annual visits to the hospital. Club captain Sam Griffiths (29) said players and staff will benefit from the visit in different ways. She said: "I'm really looking forward to going along because I know the men do it a lot, so it's nice to play a part as well. "I'll be shopping this week for a present that can hopefully make a little difference." Sam, of South Normanton, has one son, Hudson (4). She added: "It's a really good idea and hopefully it's something we can keep doing every year. Even if it makes just a small bit of difference to the children then it's been worth it."
The club will visit the children's ward on Sunday December 22nd, where they will hand over their gifts. The trip will also give the players and management a chance to talk to the children who might be spending Christmas Day in hospital. The idea came from club first team coach John Bennett, of Hemlock Way, Oakwood. The 29 year old wanted the girls to get involved after seeing how positive it had been for the men's team. He said: "We want to play a bigger part in the community and this was a great way to do it. It will be a really good experience for the girls because they need to get used to community projects, because in the future, they will be playing a high level of football." He said the girls would benefit from seeing less fortunate youngsters so they can get a sense of priorities. Mr Bennett added: "Everybody is very competitive and wants to win but there are sometimes more important things in life than football. To meet the children will let them have a sense of perspective."

Eventful day at annual club photo shoot
Duncan Gibb | Derby Telegraph | 07th December 2013
There's a saying – 'never work with children or animals'. However, earlier this week I enjoyed the experience of juggling just under 100 youngsters along with a sheep and a horse. Welcome to the Derby County Ladies photo shoot. Our nine teams, queued pitch side at the iPro Stadium, along with club mascot Rammie and representatives from club partners, The Merlin, who brought their 'Super Horse' along too.
On the pitch, our first team play Coventry City tomorrow in the FA Premier Cup at the Watkinson Bowl Arena, Borrowash (2pm kick off).
It was another good week for the club with the U15s gaining sweet revenge over Rushall in the Nott's Cup. Last year Rushall triumphed over Derby in the final of the competition via a penalty shootout , however a last minute Sophie Bonser strike well and truly laid that particular ghost to rest. Elsewhere the Reserves continued their recent good form with a superb 1-1 draw away to rivals Nottingham Forest.

Rams keen to put cup exit behind them
Derby County Ladies | Derby Telegraph | 14th December 2013
Derby County will be looking to put last weekend's FA Premier League Cup defeat behind them as they head to Blackburn Rovers in the league tomorrow. The Rams were without several players for the League Cup clash with the Sky Blues, which they lost 4-0. But it has been an eventful week, too, for Blackburn, who have just lost the services of England defender Steph Marsh after she joined Manchester City.
