HOW THE LEAGUE BEGAN
HOW THE LEAGUE BEGAN
Founded in 1998 as part of the Football Association's plan for women's football, The Combination League's were regionally separated into the Northern Combination League, Midland Combination League, South East Combination League, and South West Combination League. All four Combination League's formed the second tier in the women's football pyramid. The Combination League's fed into the FA Women's Premier League Division One (North), and (South). The League consisted of a single division of 11 clubs in 1998-1999, and 12 clubs thereafter, up until 2008-2009 when 11 clubs again competed. The member clubs were from as far afield as South Yorkshire [North], Worcestershire [South], Huntingdonshire (a district of Cambridgeshire) [East], and Shropshire (West).
Champion Clubs from the West Midland and Unison East Midland Regional Leagues were eligible for promotion to the Midland Combination League, who were the original 11 founder members.

THE FIRST SEASON
THE FIRST SEASON
The end of the first season saw League Champions Birmingham City promoted into the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League. Stratford were relegated back into the WMRL, having lost 18 of their 20 league matches. There was no relegation from the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League above. This was to increase the number of teams in the Premier League. The Combination League also welcomed three additional clubs, Telford United (WMRL Champions), Worksop Town (EMRL Champions), and Peterborough United who won their place by virtue of a play off between the two divisional runners up. Peterborough United, of the WMRL were victorious over Lichfield Diamonds, of the EMRL by 2-1. Bloxwich Town looked for an improvement in their fortunes by changing name to Wyrley Rangers.
